Superflight System VI

Superflight System VI is a solvent based, fabric covering system. Superflight has their own fabric which needs to be used with their STC.  The fabric is installed with Superflight’s U500-01 urethane adhesive that is thinned down with MEK or Acetone.  Once the fabric is glued down, it is heat shrunk to 350 degrees.  Attachment to the ribs is by the normal methods. The finishing tapes are applied with thinned U500-01 adhesive.

The fabric is seal and filled with Superflight’s catalyzed Polyurethane Primer/Filler/UV Barrier SF6500.  Flex agent SF6700 is added to the Primer/ Filler mix before spraying.  Two cross coats are sprayed on then sanded.  At least 1 1/2 cross coat of SF6500 is needed for UV protection. The color top coat is accomplished with their catalyzed Polyurethane Superthane color paint.  No flex additive is added to the paint when mixing for spraying.  The top coat can be used on the fabric, metal or fiberglass.

To repair Superflight System VI, the patch may be glued with U500-01 adhesive directly to the painted surface after scuffing the surface with Scotch Brite or sand paper. Once the patch is in place it is primed and painted. On repaired areas the polyurethane paint will not blend in to previously painted areas like dope will.  There is a way to hide the repair and the paint edge which will be the subject of another article.

The Superflight System has a fire retardant in it so the finished product will not support combustion. When it is being applied it is flammable. I have not seen the Superflight Manuals so I can not comment on them.  I gathered the above information from talking to them and from looking at their web site.

As with all solvent based polyurethane paint, you need to wear a fresh air breathing system when spraying it. A charcoal filter will not suffice.
