Fabric Systems

JANUARY 2011

(NON DOPE SYSTEMS CONTINUED)

Poly-fiber System, Owned by Consolidated Aircraft Coating.

The Poly-fiber system is the only vinyl based system on the market.  They have their own fabric and it must be used for their STC to be valid.  The fabric is attached with their Poly-Tak adhesive and heat shrunk to 350 degrees. Attachment to the ribs is by the normal methods.

The fabric is sealed with and the finishing tapes are applied with Poly-Brush. The first coat of Poly-Brush is applied with a brush and is put on before rib attachment.  After the finishing tapes are applied, a second coat of Poly-Brush is applied either by brushing or spraying. UV protection and fill is provided by Poly-Spray™, which is their silver.  There is a choice of top coat between Poly Tone, Aero-thane or Ranthane. Poly-Tone gives a dope like semi-gloss or satin finish. Aero-Thane and Ranthane are both Polyurethane wet look type of finishes.  If Poly-Tone is used it can be rejuvenated in later years as the finish starts to dry out.  Unlike dope, Poly-Tone may be used on properly prepared metal or fiberglass. If either Aero-Thane or Ranthane is used, rejuvenation is not possible.

To repair the Poly-Fiber system, regardless of the finish, you have to remove all the material down to the bare fabric.  Once it is all cleaned off, glue on a patch and build the finish back up again.

The Poly-Fiber System will not support combustion when it is completed. However,  it is flammable during application.   Poly-Fiber has one of the best manuals that is available for covering aircraft and using their covering system.

As a safety note, when spraying the Poly-Spray or Poly Tone you should wear a respirator at all times.  When spraying the Aero-Thane or Ranthane a fresh air breathing system is required.
